Piedmont’s Alpine and Speleological Rescue teams, supported by Azienda Zero Piemonte’s regional air rescue service, intervened late this morning in Bobbio Pellice (Turin) after a French hiker fell to his death. The alarm was raised by the man’s companions, who witnessed his fall from the trail during a traverse between the Cruello and Jervis mountain refuges.
The incident occurred on an exceptionally treacherous section of the route where the victim failed to arrest his descent, plunging approximately 100 meters into a rocky gully. An air rescue helicopter dispatched to the scene winched down a medical team that initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The efforts proved futile due to catastrophic multiple trauma sustained in the fall. Authorities confirmed the hiker’s death before winching the body for transfer to the Carabinieri.
A ground team later reached the victim’s companions, who were immobilized by shock. The group descended the valley partially on foot and partially via off-road vehicles provided by the local Aib volunteer unit, which assisted in the evacuation.
