A second fatal collision caused by a vehicle traveling the wrong way has occurred on a Piedmont highway, merely four days after a similar deadly incident. An 88-year-old man entered the A32 Turin-Bardonecchia highway incorrectly near Borgone di Susa earlier today, resulting in a head-on collision.
The elderly driver, now in grave condition, was airlifted to Turin’s CTO hospital. He sustained a chest trauma and neck hematoma, was intubated, and holds a guarded prognosis. His 87-year-old female passenger died at the scene. A man in his thirties, driving correctly in the France-bound lane, suffered less severe injuries when his vehicle struck the wrong-way Fiat Panda; he was transported by ambulance to Rivoli hospital.
Firefighters, including two teams of permanent and volunteer personnel supported by a helicopter unit, worked to extract victims from the wreckage. The highway was closed in both directions between Borgone di Susa and Chianocco to facilitate rescue operations and police investigations.
This tragedy echoes an incident last Sunday when 82-year-old Domenico Egidio Ceriano entered the A4 Turin-Milan highway via the Marcallo Mesero toll booth traveling the wrong way. His Peugeot 207 collided head-on with an SUV carrying four people near the Novara-Lombardy border. Ceriano and three SUV occupants died: Mario Paglino and Gianni Grossi, prominent global Barbie collectors and creators, and Amodio Giurni, 37.
