Gioacchino Sacco, the 49-year-old man from Cassino who struck and killed 16-year-old Federico Salvagni on the evening before the Ferragosto holiday in Terracina and fled the scene without rendering aid, was driving without a license, a valid vehicle inspection, or insurance.
His driver’s license had in fact been revoked and the notification served by the Terracina municipality—where he resides and where the incident occurred—last January. Furthermore, the insurance on the Lancia Ypsilon 10 he was driving had expired in July. The vehicle struck the teenager on Via Badino as he was returning home from a party with his twin brother.
Sacco appeared yesterday morning before the preliminary investigations judge (GIP), Laura Morselli, at the court of Latina for a hearing to confirm his arrest, which took place in the city’s Via Aspromonte prison. Defended by his lawyer, Fernando Maria Pellino from the Naples bar, Sacco exercised his right to remain silent before the judge but offered a spontaneous declaration, the essence of which was: “It wasn’t me.”
In the afternoon, the judge ruled, confirming his arrest and ordering him to be held in prison. Also yesterday, an autopsy was performed on the teenager’s body to determine the exact cause of death before the remains are released to his family for funeral services. The funeral is scheduled for today at 2 PM in the Church of the Sacro Cuore in Latina, the city where the boy lived.
