Italian President Sergio Mattarella emphasized the “unique relationship” between France and Italy in a message to French President Emmanuel Macron for France’s July 14th National Day. Mattarella recalled Macron’s own warm Republic Day message from June 2nd, stating the nations are “vital allies for one another,” united by shared cultural roots and multiple prominent interests.
“The Quirinal Treaty remains the privileged instrument for bilateral cooperation,” Mattarella stated, “whose implementation holds a priority character for both Paris and Rome.” He stressed that “structured collaboration between trusted partners is indispensable” to navigate the current international context marked by complex challenges and rising tensions.
Mattarella underscored the two countries’ shared responsibility: “called to maintain together a leading role on the world stage, starting with the commitment to effectively counter the current and most urgent threats to peace.” He concluded that stability, security, prosperity, and continental competitiveness depend on this joint responsibility. He further highlighted the European integration process as crucial for fostering a “rules-based, peaceful, and interdependent multilateral order.”
