Strong Earthquakes Strike Indonesia and Spain

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck off eastern Indonesia today, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor was centered 179 km southwest of Tual at a depth of 65.7 km. No tsunami alerts have been issued so far.

Separately, southern Spain’s Almeria province was hit by a 5.5-magnitude quake at 7:13 a.m. local time, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported. Originating at sea with a depth of 2 km, the shockwave was felt in Gibraltar, Morocco, and Algeria but caused no casualties or significant damage. The center noted the quake occurred in a high-activity seismic zone along the African-Eurasian tectonic plate boundary and warned of possible aftershocks in the coming days, urging residents to exercise “maximum caution.”
