Italy’s women’s national football team delivered a powerful message of belief with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Norway in Geneva, securing a place in the European Championship semifinals for the first time since 1997. Striker Cristiana Girelli’s brace propelled Andrea Soncin’s underdog squad past the Scandinavian giants, who entered the quarterfinal with a perfect group-stage record.
This historic achievement, last matched when the tournament featured only eight teams, surpasses pre-tournament expectations which saw reaching the quarterfinals as a success. “It’s an incredible emotion, everything is fantastic. It’s a great message for our whole movement, a gift for everyone passionate about football,” said coach Soncin. “We are proud; the girls did something exceptional. Now let’s enjoy this moment, then we’ll think about the semi-final.”
Facing a packed Stade de Geneve with strong support, including FIGC president Gabriele Gravina, Italy defied the odds against a star-studded Norwegian side. Despite Norway’s group-stage dominance, their defensive vulnerability – conceding in all three matches – was exposed by Italy.
The Azzurre started brightly, creating early chances through Barbara Bonansea’s runs down the left and efforts from Valentina Cernoia and Manuela Giugliano. Giugliano found herself one-on-one with the keeper in the 22nd minute, only to be denied. Norway threatened sporadically, most notably when Caroline Graham Hansen narrowly missed connecting with an Ada Hegerberg cross and Frida Maanum struck a long-range effort just wide.
Italy broke through early in the second half. Girelli slid in to convert Lisa Boattin’s low cross in the 50th minute for her 60th international goal. A potential second goal by Valentina Giacinti was ruled offside moments later. Norway was handed a lifeline when Elena Linari fouled Hegerberg in the box, but the Norwegian star blasted the resulting penalty over the bar in the 60th minute. Hegerberg redeemed herself six minutes later, capitalizing on defensive uncertainty to equalize.
Norway pressed for a winner, but Italy weathered the storm. Deep into stoppage time, Girelli rose highest to meet Giacinti’s lofted cross, powering home a decisive header for her 61st Italy goal and sealing a monumental victory. Italy now awaits the winner of the Sweden vs. England semifinal.
