Environment Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin sparked outrage at Italy’s Chamber of Deputies today after insulting journalist Vanessa Ricciardi, calling her a “little shit” (“stronzetta”) during a confrontation. The incident occurred outside the parliamentary group hall in Montecitorio, Rome, following a conference presenting a nuclear energy study by Confindustria and Enea.
Ricciardi, a reporter for Staffetta Quotidiana, had questioned the minister on energy policy when he uttered the slur. Pichetto Fratin and his staff initially attempted to downplay the remark, claiming it was intended as “a compliment” meant positively. Ricciardi reacted angrily, demanding appropriate language when engaging with the press.
Swift condemnation came from opposition politicians, prompting Pichetto Fratin to issue an official apology shortly after the incident. “I wish to apologize to journalist Vanessa Ricciardi for the words I spoke at the end of an exchange with the press,” the minister stated. “I used an inappropriate expression, said in a tone meant to be joking but which, understandably, was perceived as offensive. I deeply regret it: it does not reflect my character nor the respect I have for all women and men in journalism, with whom I engage positively every day.”
Opposition parties united in condemning the minister’s language. Five Star Movement (M5S) representatives on the Culture Committee called the remarks “shameful,” stating they “denote the usual unworthy macho culture” and criticizing the Meloni government’s record on press access. Angelo Bonelli, deputy for the Greens and Left Alliance (AVS), deemed the incident “unacceptable.” Democratic Party (PD) deputy Patrizia Prestipino questioned the minister’s motives, asking: “I wonder if the minister would have made the same ‘joke’, patting a man on the shoulder and calling him ‘little shit’?”
