Mayors Demand National Security Pact and Increased Funding

Urban security remains a top priority for both the government and mayors. “We stand ready to contribute, but adequate resources, integrated urban safety policies, and crucially, a reinforced law enforcement presence are essential to combat threats undermining safety in our cities,” stated mayors and the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI) following talks with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi. The municipal leaders called for “a new national pact ensuring citizens’ right to safety and livability in Italian cities,” criticizing the allocated €24.5 million ($26.5 million) for 2025 urban security as “grossly inadequate.”

During the meeting—attended by ANCI President and Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi alongside mayors of Bologna, Ancona, Novara, Bari, Florence, Perugia, Palermo, Vicenza, and Genoa—officials emphasized the critical need to “enhance interconnections between local police dispatch centers regionally.” They simultaneously advocated “strengthening municipal police forces through fixed-term hiring, mirroring the recruitment model for social workers.” The ANCI delegation concluded: “Stable state funding is imperative, followed by establishing standardized service objectives based on personnel-to-resident ratios.”
