Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has condemned Israeli attacks in Gaza, including a strike on the Holy Family Church compound that injured Father Gabriel Romanelli. Crosetto expressed solidarity with the priest.
“Today, as yesterday, as last week, as last month and three months ago, more innocent Palestinians have died – men, women, children,” Crosetto stated. “They are not part of Hamas; they are its prisoners and hostages instead. Their only crime is being born in a land torn apart by hatred, in a dramatic time when reason has fallen asleep. For months now, we have witnessed something inhuman, heart-rending, and horrible.”
The minister asserted that “Hamas terrorists use the poor people of Gaza as human shields.” However, he warned, “Some Israeli forces risk almost becoming complicit with Hamas in killing non-combatant Palestinians. This plays into the terrorists’ hands. It is an ignominious trap, but the Israeli government must not fall into it and must fully accept that defending international law is the prerequisite for defending its own existence.”
“The war in Gaza must end,” Crosetto continued. “The fight against Hamas must continue. These two things are not interchangeable, they must not be, and it is unacceptable to portray them as inseparable. Similarly, I consider the attack carried out in Syria very dangerous, including for the Druze population itself.”
