Italy’s national workers’ compensation authority (INAIL) received 495 reports of workplace fatalities in the first six months of 2025, an increase compared to the 462 reported during the same period last year. Excluding student cases, INAIL data indicates the rise was primarily driven by a surge in commuting accidents (occurring during travel between home and work), which climbed from 104 to 137.
Conversely, reported non-fatal workplace injuries saw a slight decrease in the first half of the year, falling from 250,766 (January-June 2024) to 249,549 (January-June 2025).
Reports of injuries involving students, covered by INAIL for all public and private school students since 2023, increased overall. However, reports for students participating in school-to-work programs (specifically Percorsi per le Competenze Trasversali e l’Orientamento – PCTO) declined. Of the over 49,000 student injury reports, 1,152 involved PCTO participants, representing a 13% decrease compared to 2024.
