Sant’Egidio Marks Assumption Day with Solidarity Events for Vulnerable Groups

The Community of Sant’Egidio will host numerous initiatives this Assumption Day, offering a response to abandonment and loneliness. These events deliver a message of peace and solidarity during a time marked by war, violence, and widespread indifference towards those needing support and friendship.

According to a community statement, gatherings and communal lunches, crowned by the traditional watermelon sharing, will take place in Rome and other Italian cities. Participants will include the community’s long-standing friends: isolated elderly, homeless individuals, and migrants—some arriving via humanitarian corridors and now integrated. Many attendees, including Afghans marking four years since the Kabul exodus began on August 15, 2021, will help prepare and serve meals.

In Rome, the traditional Assumption Day lunch occurs Friday, August 15th, at 12:00 PM at the Via Dandolo 10 soup kitchen. The “Solidarity Assumption Day” will also be observed in Sant’Egidio’s numerous cohousing projects and shared living arrangements with seniors, people with disabilities, and formerly homeless individuals.

Significant events include watermelon-sharing initiatives in multiple Italian prisons, reflecting concern over prison conditions. These will occur on Thursday, August 14th, starting at 10:00 AM at the women’s facility in Rebibbia, and on Friday, August 15th, also from 10:00 AM, at the New Men’s Complex, Regina Coeli, and the Casal del Marmo juvenile detention center, reaching over 3,000 inmates. Similar events are planned at Civitavecchia’s two institutions.

Solidarity celebrations, lunches, and events extend beyond Rome to cities including Milan (August 15th, 6:30 PM, Living Together Space, Via dei Cinquecento 7, Corvetto), Genoa (Santa Sabina Square soup kitchen, Marassi prison, Pra’ House of Friendship, and other locations), Padua (August 15th, 5:00 PM, House of Friendship, Via Santa Maria in Conio 12), and other Italian locations.
