For the second time in a matter of days, malfunctioning equipment in the autopsy room of the “San Vito” cemetery has caused significant problems for pathologists. The first incident involved the body of Alessandro Venier, the man murdered and dismembered by his mother and her partner in Gemona. A procedural error led to his remains not being extracted from the refrigerated unit in time, leaving them partially frozen. Forensic experts were forced to delay the examination until the body thawed.
In a contrasting incident yesterday, an autopsy on another case could not be performed at all because the corpse had severely decomposed. These recurring failures threaten to compromise the outcome of judicial inquiries, which rely on autopsies to establish responsibility, often in sensitive cases. The problems persist despite the local municipality having recently certified to the Prosecutor’s Office that the facility was fully suitable for carrying out such examinations.
