A dramatic accident occurred on the Aurelia highway near La Torba, in the municipality of Capalbio, Grosseto. A heavy goods vehicle (HGV) collided with a car and, careening out of control, subsequently crashed into a cheese factory, breaching an exterior wall.
Preliminary reports indicate the car driver was killed, while the truck driver was injured but is not in serious condition. The Aurelia has been closed in both directions to allow for emergency services and accident investigations by the traffic police. The HGV became lodged in the building, causing a partial collapse of the roof. The incident took place at kilometer 134 on the stretch of road between Capalbio and Ansedonia. The causes of the collision are under investigation by the traffic police and Carabinieri.
The victim, a 59-year-old man from Rome, is believed to have been the sole occupant of the car. Firefighters were on the scene to remove the vehicle, check the structural stability of the building, and recover the victim’s body. The Pegaso air ambulance was dispatched but was later stood down without being required to intervene. Three people inside the building managed to escape to safety immediately after the impact.
The truck driver, a 58-year-old Romanian national, was injured and hospitalized under a yellow code (moderate severity) at the Misericordia hospital in Grosseto. He is reported to be in non-life-threatening condition and is being questioned by police. Emergency services also report a second injured person, an individual inside the building who was transported to the Orbetello emergency room under a green code (minor injury). The exact dynamics and causes of the crash remain to be established.
Gianfranco Chelini, the mayor of Capalbio, protested: “Enough is enough. More people have died on this stretch of the Aurelia road than on the Morandi bridge. Outrage always lasts just one morning, but here in Capalbio we have a macabre recurrence; we are keeping count of the victims on that road. The right and the left have done nothing. Now that the right is in government, also out of respect for Altero Matteoli who died on this very road, they should immediately prioritize making the Aurelia safe and reconsider the Tyrrhenian Corridor as a top priority.”
