An unusually large dust and sand storm, driven by winds reaching 50 km/h from a Pacific high-pressure system, has blanketed four coastal regions in southern Peru. The Peruvian National Meteorological and Hydrological Service (Senamhi) reported the event, stating conditions are likely to continue at least until Sunday.
Senamhi attributed the storm to the ‘paracas’ wind phenomenon, caused by temperature differences between warm and cold air along the coast. In the city of Ica, located approximately 400 km south of Lima, sand and dust brought road traffic and tourist activities to a standstill for several hours.
Peru’s Health Ministry announced via social media platform X that it is monitoring the potential health impacts resulting from these conditions.
