Amid Overtourism Concerns in Mountain Regions, Alto Adige Launches AI Chatbot Touristinfo.ai

As mountain destinations grapple with overtourism, South Tyrol has introduced Touristinfo.ai—an artificial intelligence chatbot designed to support tourism boards by serving as a digital destination manager. The tool integrates live data from parking systems, traffic monitors, site access points, and weather forecasts to direct visitors toward sustainable options via WhatsApp and partner destinations’ digital platforms. Operating in users’ preferred languages, it redistributes tourists across the region to mitigate overcrowding.

Already deployed in San Vigilio di Marebbe (Val Badia), Valdaora, Anterselva, and Appiano—alongside multiple hotels—Touristinfo.ai recently secured an agreement with Dolomites Val Gardena for service implementation.

The chatbot was developed by Mediatize, a South Tyrolean startup incubated at NOI Techpark and co-founded by Julian Palmarin, 27. “Our goal is to optimize tourist experiences,” stated Palmarin. “A core achievement is the balanced distribution of visitor flows.”

Sebastian Betz, 33, the German technologist behind the solution, emphasized its functionality: “Our multilingual, 24/7 multichannel system—spanning WhatsApp, websites, and social media—integrates local data on trails, events, dining, lodging, and transport to deliver reliable, brand-aligned responses.”
