Italians Luciano Darderi and Lorenzo Sonego have secured their places in the Round of 16 at the ATP 250 tournament in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Their compatriots, Matteo Arnaldi and Mattia Bellucci, have been eliminated from the competition.
World No. 34 Darderi, 23, defeated 30-year-old American Mackenzie McDonald (No. 101) in a hard-fought match, 7-6(7/5), 6-7(6/8), 6-4. He will next face 25-year-old Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic (No. 45).
Turin’s Lorenzo Sonego (No. 35), 30, advanced by ousting 23-year-old American wild card Stefan Dostanic (No. 412) with a score of 6-3, 6-7(2/7), 7-6(7/3). His opponent in the next round will be 28-year-old Spaniard Jaume Munar (No. 46), who defeated Italy’s Mattia Bellucci (No. 63) decisively, 6-3, 6-1.
Matteo Arnaldi (No. 62) was eliminated by 29-year-old Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (No. 92) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
