Despite active red signals, numerous motorists ignored closure orders and drove through the blocked SS51 “Alemagna” highway near San Vito di Cadore (Belluno) overnight. The road, a vital link between the lowlands and Cortina d’Ampezzo, was reopened this morning after the landslide alert ended. Authorities had closed the artery around 10:30 PM following heavy thunderstorms that triggered rain gauge alarms; the closure remained in effect until 6:00 AM.
Dozens of vehicles reportedly traversed the prohibited stretch. Drivers seemingly gambled that the recent alert meant ANAS (Italy’s road agency) personnel had not yet arrived to enforce the closure.
However, fines could still be issued to those who took the risk. The area is under constant surveillance by cameras monitoring the highway.
