Outrage Over Dog’s Death: Chained and Abandoned in Heatwave While Owner Vacationed

Public fury has erupted following the discovery of a dog’s emaciated corpse near Naples, Italy. The animal died of starvation and exposure after being left chained outdoors for two days by its owner, who had departed on vacation.

Green-Left Alliance deputy Francesco Emilio Borrelli detailed the incident: “Yesterday evening, alerted by animal activist Enrico Rizzi, I went to Giugliano to verify this appalling situation. A woman went on holiday, leaving her two dogs exposed to the elements. One was chained with only a few centimetres of slack. After two days under the scorching sun and intense heat, it died in agonizing suffering.”

Borrelli confirmed municipal police and officers from the Italian Animal Protection Agency (OIPA) intervened, managing to save only one dog at the last moment. The owner has been reported to authorities but has chosen not to return from her vacation.

“What happened is inhumanly cruel,” Borrelli stated. “The poor animal tried desperately to free itself, even injuring itself, but tragically failed, meeting a truly unworthy end. I hope those responsible for this torture face consequences. I appeal to all citizens: report any dangerous situation. Let’s defend our four-legged friends. Don’t look the other way.”

Nando Cirella, an OIPA animal protection officer, explained the fatal risk: “Heatstroke in dogs is a serious veterinary emergency. It occurs when an animal’s body temperature rises dangerously high due to heat and an inability to cool down. Recognizing symptoms and acting immediately is crucial to prevent severe, potentially lethal consequences. Therefore, all pet owners have an obligation never to leave their animals exposed to the sun, especially while chained. Dogs must always have access to cool, shaded areas and plenty of water.”
