Summer Exodus Sees 27.4 Million Journeys on Italian Roads

Anas, Italy’s state-owned road operator, recorded 27.4 million vehicle transits across its network between Friday, August 8th, and midday Sunday during the peak summer travel weekend. As forecasted, traffic surged significantly starting Friday. The peak occurred Saturday morning, marked with a “black sticker” by Viabilità Italia, as holidaymakers departed major cities coinciding with the widespread closure of businesses for the mid-August break.

Saturday, August 9th, saw an average 3% increase in traffic compared to the previous Saturday (August 2nd). Southern Italy experienced the sharpest rise, with traffic up 10% on the Anas network there. Routes near coastal resorts saw a 5% increase, while those near mountain destinations surged by 11%.

Anticipating the heavy traffic, Anas suspended additional construction sites beyond those halted earlier in August. In total, 1,392 sites (over 83% of the 1,672 active projects) were paused. Furthermore, Anas bolstered its nationwide 24/7 traffic monitoring efforts, deploying approximately 2,500 technical, operational, and control room staff in rotating shifts across its national and regional operations centers to manage the flow.
