Firefighters are still battling a large wildfire that erupted this afternoon in the woods of Terzigno. The blaze is currently affecting the Monte Somma slopes within Vesuvius National Park, specifically the municipal territories of Terzigno and Ottaviano, reaching an altitude of 1,050 meters. Fanned by wind and high temperatures, the flames rapidly advanced along the ridge. Ground crews and aerial units operated until sunset when all interventions were suspended for safety reasons. A tall column of smoke from the fire is visible from Naples.
“The situation remains grave,” emphasized officials from Vesuvius National Park, “and will be reassessed at first light, when we hope to strengthen aerial firefighting efforts. A permanent emergency coordination table has been activated at the Naples Prefecture, involving all institutions tasked with managing this ongoing crisis.”
“We are concerned,” stated Raffaele De Luca, President of Vesuvius National Park, “and are monitoring the fire’s progress minute by minute in constant contact with the competent authorities. We rely on the tireless work of the ground crews and aerial unit pilots, to whom we extend our deepest gratitude. Our focus is on safeguarding the natural heritage and ensuring the safety of those living and working around the volcano.”
