Italian Schools Announce Staggered Start Dates for 2025-2026 Academic Year

As summer vacations wind down, focus shifts to the 2025-2026 school year start dates across Italy, revealing significant regional variations. Students in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano will be the first back in class on Monday, September 8. Puglia and Calabria students face the latest start, returning a week later on Tuesday, September 16.

The portal Skuola.net compiled the regional schedules, emphasizing that families should confirm exact dates with their local schools. Following Bolzano’s start, Trento, Veneto, Valle d’Aosta, and Piedmont resume classes on Wednesday, September 10. Friuli Venezia Giulia follows on Thursday, September 11, with Lombardy starting on Friday, September 12.

The largest cohort returns on Monday, September 15, including students from Umbria, Toscana, Sicilia, Sardegna, Molise, Marche, Liguria, Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, Basilicata, Campania, and Abruzzo. Puglia and Calabria close the staggered start on September 16.

Regions starting later must compensate to meet the mandatory minimum of 200 instructional days, either by extending the school year or reducing mid-year breaks. Individual schools retain autonomy to adjust regional calendars slightly.

After the term begins, the first holiday break falls on All Saints’ Day, Saturday, November 1, minimizing disruption for most schools. A more significant closure occurs for the Immaculate Conception on Monday, December 8. Christmas holidays, with minor regional variations, will run from Monday, December 22, 2025, to Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

Following Christmas, schools face a long stretch until Easter Monday on April 6, 2026 (Easter Sunday is April 5). Some regions (Lombardy, Piedmont, Trento, and Bolzano) will grant Carnival breaks.

The year concludes with national holidays: Liberation Day (April 25, 2026) and Labour Day (May 1, 2026) both fall on Saturdays, limiting long weekend potential. Republic Day on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, offers a better opportunity for an extended break.
