The Milan Prosecutor’s Office is investigating conflicting versions of an alleged assault on a French Jewish tourist last Sunday at a highway rest stop in Lainate, near Milan. Authorities have opened a case file for aggravated assault motivated by racial hatred. According to the investigation, two groups targeted the 52-year-old man and his 6-year-old son because they were wearing kippahs. In recent days, members of these groups have filed counter-complaints for injuries against the tourist. They allege he called them “terrorists” and, after they responded with “free Palestine,” insulted and threatened them.
DIGOS police officers, coordinated by Deputy Prosecutor Eugenio Fusco, have identified four individuals allegedly involved in the incident. Another five to six people are pending identification. Investigators have obtained both a video recorded by the tourist on his mobile phone and security camera footage from the rest area, though the latter lacks audio.
