The Naples Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the deaths of three workers who fell to their deaths yesterday after the collapse of an elevator basket. Key focuses include verifying the workers’ legal employment status and compliance with safety regulations.
Investigators are examining the hypothesis that the upper section of the column supporting the basket failed under the excessive weight of the three workers and a roll of bitumen. This structural failure allegedly caused components to give way, tipping the basket and plunging the workers into the void.
The investigation, led by Deputy Prosecutor Antonio Ricci and Assistant Prosecutor Stella Castaldo, continues intensively. Following an initial site inspection, prosecutors will analyze technical data from the collapsed basket and its supporting structure. This analysis aims to determine if the equipment was genuinely capable of bearing the load it carried.
Prosecutors from the specialized “Labour and Professional Liability” section have requested relevant documentation. They await a more complete picture of events before considering formal suspect registrations or determining potential criminal charges.
