Two of the three workers killed yesterday in Naples when a construction lift overturned were working illegally without proper contracts, investigative sources have confirmed, corroborating initial reports by media outlets including Il Mattino and La Repubblica.
The Naples Prosecutor’s Office is examining compliance with safety regulations as a key part of its investigation. Authorities are also seeking confirmation of a critical detail: the workers reportedly were not wearing helmets and were not secured by safety harnesses, which would have prevented their fatal plunge.
Among the initial hypotheses is that the upper section of the column supporting the lift basket may have failed under excessive weight. The basket was carrying the three workers and a roll of bitumen when, after some components gave way, it overturned, sending the workers plummeting to their deaths.
Following an initial site inspection, investigators will analyze technical data from the lift basket and its supporting structure to verify if it was genuinely capable of bearing the applied load. Prosecutors from the sixth section, specializing in “Work and Professional Liability,” have requested documentation. They await a more complete picture before potentially registering individuals in the register of suspects or proposing specific charges.
Four Suspects Identified**
Four individuals are now under investigation for the collapse that killed the three workers. Il Mattino and La Repubblica name them as the building administrator, the site safety coordinator, the owner of the company employing the workers, and the owner of the company that rented out the lift that failed. The investigative hypothesis is multiple manslaughter. Authorities clarify that this is a procedural step pending the outcome of autopsies on the victims’ bodies.
