A 64-year-old worker died at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport following a fall from height. According to initial reports, the subcontractor fell while working on the roof of a maintenance hangar for reasons still under investigation. The CGIL union of Rome and Lazio confirmed the incident.
Describing it as a “tragedy,” the union expressed profound condolences and outrage, demanding swift clarification of the circumstances. The CGIL stated the incident raises urgent questions about whether proper fall-arrest safety systems, designed to prevent accidental falls and save lives, were present and correctly utilized.
“This latest accident,” the CGIL emphasized, “unfortunately demonstrates yet again that fatalities occur within the chain of contractors and subcontractors. We continue mobilizing to change contracting rules, aiming to guarantee health and safety, including by increasing the accountability of client companies.”
The union stressed that halting workplace deaths requires commitment from all parties, including businesses, who “cannot remain spectators.” It cited alarming regional statistics: 17,925 workplace injuries were reported in Lazio during the first five months of the year, a 3.75% increase over the same period last year, alongside 29 confirmed fatal accidents – a toll tragically surpassed by today’s event.
