Outgoing Campania President Vincenzo De Luca has reportedly lifted strong objections to potential candidates for the regional presidency, including that of former Chamber of Deputies speaker Roberto Fico. Sources within the Democratic Party (PD) close to the matter disclosed this development following a meeting in Rome between PD Secretary Elly Schlein and De Luca ahead of the upcoming Campania regional elections.
According to these sources, De Luca has not closed the door to the PD and the Five Star Movement (M5S) jointly endorsing Fico as their candidate for Campania president.
During the talks, De Luca also reportedly confirmed he will not stand for election to the Campania Regional Council. However, he insisted that the PD must hold its regional congress before the elections to finally elect a PD secretary for Campania. The party’s regional branch has been under the administration of national deputy secretary Antonio Misiani since April 1, 2023.
