At least 15 people died and 30 were injured when a bus plunged into a ravine in Peru’s central Andean region of Junín, local health authorities reported.
The vehicle, carrying more than 60 passengers, veered off the road on a sharp curve and fell approximately 50 meters into the abyss. The bus was traveling from the capital, Lima, to La Merced in the Amazon region.
Road accidents remain common in Peru, primarily attributed to speeding and reckless driving, widespread impunity for offenders, poor road conditions, and inadequate signage. According to Peruvian police, 3,173 people have died in road accidents across the South American country so far in 2024.
