A major exhibition featuring the late Queen Elizabeth II as a style icon, showcasing over 200 items from her wardrobe including dresses, jewels, shoes, and famously photographed hats, will open at Buckingham Palace next year. Titled ‘Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style’, the London exhibition will trace the evolution of the monarch’s fashion throughout her long life, which ended on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96. Among the relics of this history-making figure is the 1947 wedding dress created by designer Sir Norman Hartnell. Throughout her reign, Elizabeth directly influenced fashion with her distinctive outfits, notably her signature pastel dresses. She remained a trendsetter even in later life; her rectangular leather handbags sparked a craze at age 85 and were featured in glossy magazines. Seen as both traditional and youthful, “Lizzy” represented an unprecedented mix in the public imagination, consistently adapting to the times. This unique blend is central to the exhibition, which displays clothes and accessories worn by the Queen from her childhood in the 1930s onwards. Alongside official event attire, a rich selection of her everyday wear is featured, including riding jackets, tartan skirts, and headscarves.
