Barefoot Dawn Prayer Becomes Beach Tradition Honoring Grandparents

As a shy sun illuminates the quiet sea, barefoot prayers rise from the sands of Margherita di Savoia in northern Puglia. The strum of a guitar accompanies the dawn at this unique beachside ceremony, now a local tradition. Held annually at 6 am on July 26th, the feast day of Saints Joachim and Anne (grandparents of Jesus), residents gather where the waves meet the shore to pray and bless grandparents.

The initiative was established by parish priest Don Michele Schiavone of San Pio Church, who chose the early hour to avoid the summer heat. “We experienced this beach prayer to pray for those who help mothers and fathers, but above all, who shower their grandchildren with affection,” explained Don Michele, serving freshly baked croissants. Following the blessing, participants share breakfast together.

“This year too, many people participated, some coming from neighbouring towns. There were also many grandparents with their grandchildren: and this is truly beautiful,” he added. The beach blessing fosters community and serves as a reminder of the vital role the elderly play as family pillars and living memories.

“However, this morning we also wanted to pray for those who wish to become parents but cannot,” concluded Don Schiavone. “Our hope is that through the intercession of Joachim and Anne, they may realize this life-long desire.”
