Vladimir Radu, a 39-year-old Moldovan national, died on June 23rd after two days in critical condition following a brain hemorrhage. The hemorrhage occurred after Radu was punched in the face outside the Area City nightclub in Mestre while defending his 14-year-old son during an argument.
The incident took place on June 21st. According to local newspapers, Radu succumbed to the hemorrhage just two days later. His alleged assailant, a 25-year-old Moldovan man, was detained one week ago on orders from Venice prosecutor Alessia Tavarnesi, who charged him with manslaughter. The suspect initially fled abroad, reportedly to Moldova, but was apprehended upon returning to Italy.
However, following validation of the arrest, the suspect was released. He is required to remain in the municipality of Spinea, near Mestre, under a mandatory residence order.
Investigations suggest the tragic episode began with offensive remarks, possibly a derogatory comment, made by the minor towards the adult. The ensuing dispute in the nightclub parking lot escalated into a violent altercation, prompting Radu to intervene to protect his son.
In his account to authorities, the 25-year-old claimed Radu threatened him and grabbed him by the neck. He stated that after a shove, he punched Radu in the face, causing him to collapse onto the asphalt. Two witnesses present with Radu saw the assault.
Investigators and forensic experts must now determine whether the fatal hemorrhage was caused directly by the force of the punch or by the impact of Radu’s head striking the ground during his fall.
The Area City nightclub in Mestre has a history of violent incidents. Recently, the Venice Police Chief ordered its closure for 15 days due to it being a frequent site of assaults and violence.
