A 42-year-old Australian base jumper died this afternoon after leaping from Sass Pordoi peak in Italy’s Fassa Valley. The man – part of a group staying at the Lupo Bianco resort, his intended landing zone – crashed onto a hairpin bend on State Road 48 at approximately 1,700 meters altitude. His impact site lay 400 meters below the jump point. Preliminary reports indicate a technical malfunction prevented timely parachute deployment.
Fellow jumpers alerted emergency services via the 112 hotline around 1 PM. Trentino Alpine Rescue dispatched a ground team to the accident site while coordinating helicopter support. Air rescue technicians and medical personnel performed unsuccessful resuscitation attempts upon arrival. Canazei firefighters and police secured the area.
Following official authorization, the victim’s remains were transported to the valley by ambulance. The Alpine Rescue Service of Trentino’s High Fassa Valley station led the response.
