Rome’s Court of Assize of Appeal has reduced the sentence of engineer Costantino Bonaiuti to 24 years and 8 months imprisonment, overturning his original life sentence for the fatal shooting of lawyer Martina Scialdone. The killing occurred on January 13, 2023, outside a restaurant in Rome’s Appio Latino district. Appellate judges excluded the aggravating factor of premeditation in their ruling.
Martina Scialdone’s mother, Viviana, denounced the decision: “I am deeply disappointed. I expected the life sentence to stand. Justice was not served—other femicide cases have upheld life sentences.”
