A Rome single-judge court has convicted two Carabinieri officers and acquitted a third accused of false testimony during the trial concerning obstruction of justice in the Stefano Cucchi case investigations. The court sentenced Marshal Giuseppe Perri to three years and six months in prison. Prospero Fortunato, who was a captain and commander of the accident investigation and judicial police section at the Rome Radio Mobile Unit at the time, received a four-year sentence. Maurizio Bertolino, a marshal at the Tor Sapienza station during the events, was acquitted on the grounds that “the fact does not exist.” The charges against the officers, varying by individual, included obstruction of justice (for statements made during the investigations) and ideological falsehood committed by a public official in public documents.
