Two Carabinieri Convicted, One Cleared in Stefano Cucchi Cover-Up Trial

A Rome single judge has delivered verdicts against three Carabinieri officers accused of falsifying testimony during investigations into the Stefano Cucchi case. Giuseppe Perri, then a marshal, received a 3-year, 6-month sentence, while Prospero Fortunato, a captain at the time and head of Rome’s Mobile Unit’s accident investigation section, was sentenced to 4 years. Maurizio Bertolino, formerly a marshal at Tor Sapienza station, was fully acquitted on grounds that “the offense did not occur.” The officers faced charges including obstruction of justice for misleading statements during probes and ideological falsehood in public documents by state officials.
