Musical Training Preserves Youthful Brain Function in Seniors, Study Finds

Playing a musical instrument maintains brain youth and counters age-related decline in speech perception, according to research published in *PLOS Biology* by the Baycrest Academy for Research and Education (Canada) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Using functional MRI, researchers measured brain activity in 25 elderly musicians, 25 elderly non-musicians, and 24 young non-musicians while they identified speech syllables masked by background noise.

Results revealed elderly musicians outperformed their non-musician peers in recognizing speech. Non-musician seniors exhibited brain overactivity as their brains strained to compensate for cognitive decline, while elderly musicians demonstrated brain activity and connectivity patterns mirroring those of young non-musicians. The findings support the hypothesis that musical practice enhances cognitive reserve, offsetting age-related decline and preserving neural network integrity.

“A positive lifestyle helps seniors better manage cognitive aging,” commented Lei Zhang of Baycrest. “It’s never too late to start and maintain a rewarding hobby like learning an instrument.” Yi Du of the Chinese Academy of Sciences added: “Just as a well-tuned instrument doesn’t need to be played louder to be heard, the brains of elderly musicians remain perfectly tuned through years of training. Our study shows this musical experience strengthens cognitive reserve, helping the brain avoid the typical age-related overexertion seen when understanding speech in noisy environments.”
