Microsoft Debuts AI-Powered “Describe Image” Preview on Windows 11

Microsoft has launched a preview version of its “Describe Image” feature for Windows 11, leveraging generative AI to deliver detailed descriptions of photos, charts, and diagrams. While not explicitly designed for accessibility, the tool aids visually impaired users by creating descriptive text that Windows’ speech synthesis can vocalize, including nuanced visual analysis.

Currently exclusive to Copilot Plus PCs—hardware equipped for offline AI processing—the feature operates locally upon initial activation. “Required models configure automatically during first use, generating descriptions entirely on-device to safeguard sensitive data,” Microsoft stated.

The company confirmed support for Snapdragon processors, with Intel and AMD compatibility slated for later this year. Competitors like Google offer analogous functions via Gemini’s camera-based “live view” for contextual queries. However, experts at Windows Central note a key distinction: Gemini relies on continuous cloud data exchange, while Copilot Plus devices process tasks locally for enhanced speed and privacy.
