Mafia Boss Wins Right to Face-to-Face Visits with Pen Pal Lover After 17 Years

Rome – A Cosa Nostra boss serving a harsh prison sentence has secured the right to in-person meetings with a British-Italian woman he fell in love with through 17 years of letters, Italy’s Supreme Court ruled. Davide Emmanuello, 60, imprisoned under the strict “41 bis” isolation regime since 1993, prevailed in his legal battle against the Justice Ministry, which had blocked contact with Clare Holme, 55.

The Court of Cassation upheld a lower court’s decision, emphasizing Emmanuello’s “right to emotional fulfillment” while balancing public safety concerns. Justices noted the couple’s “meritorious” epistolary and romantic bond, citing Holme’s lack of ties to organized crime and the relationship’s role in Emmanuello’s rehabilitation.

The former Gela clan leader has a history of challenging detention conditions. A decade ago, he was barred from reading Umberto Eco’s *The Name of the Rose* due to its “dangerous” hardcover. In 2015, he invoked Aristotle in a letter claiming innocence, writing that truth and error occupy “an intermediate space dominated by the plausible.”

Holme, a Modena-based prisoner rehabilitation advocate, told ANSA: “We’ve corresponded since 2008. Seeing him for the first time last May—two hours to express our love—was overwhelming. When I met him, I saw hope.” Emmanuello, still deemed “dangerous” by authorities, remains in isolation but has transcended “emotions of ink” through the court’s landmark decision.
