A deeply moved crowd packed Tempio Pausania Cathedral in Gallura for the final farewell to Gaia Costa. The 24-year-old was struck and killed by an SUV on July 8th while crossing at a pedestrian crossing in Porto Cervo.
Many mourners were unable to enter St. Peter the Apostle Church and remained outside. Similarly, hundreds gathered earlier at the Oratory of the Rosary opposite the cathedral, where the funeral chapel had been set up. A long procession of friends, relatives, and residents of Tempio paid their respects, offering support to Gaia’s parents, Cisl trade unionist Alfredo Costa and his wife Debora Caffiero.
During the homily, parish priest Efisio Coni also remembered two other young road victims: the two boys who died Sunday morning near Arzachena while travelling to work.
As the coffin left the church, mourners released white balloons. Sardinian singer Sòleandro dedicated his song “Savitri” to Gaia.
Folk groups from Tempio Pausania and Cagliari’s Villanova district joined the funeral procession to the cemetery.
