The President of Italy’s Puglia region, Michele Emiliano, stated upon arriving at talks on the former Ilva steel plant at the Ministry of Enterprises that the program agreement “still needs to mature within the logic of local authorities.” He criticized Italy for “once again delegating its industrial destiny to the Municipality of Taranto,” while lamenting that “no one, however, is showing solidarity with Taranto’s mayor.” Emiliano stressed the newly elected mayor “will have to tell his citizens on behalf of all Italy that they must endure pollution for years more as polluting sources remain operational.” “The outlook is difficult,” Emiliano added, “because this is a dramatic situation left to fester for years and years and years.”
