Dogs of any size can travel free of charge on Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, Intercity, and Intercity Notte trains until September 15, 2025. This initiative by the FS Group subsidiary aims to simplify medium and long-distance journeys with pets.
The ‘Cani Gratis’ (Free Dogs) promotion permits dogs to travel without a carrier, provided they are kept on a leash and wear a muzzle. Passengers must book their dog’s ticket by selecting the “Viaggia con il tuo cane” (Travel with your dog) service when purchasing their own ticket. This option is available through all Trenitalia sales channels.
Small pets travelling in carriers (maximum dimensions 70x30x50 cm) always travel free. On Regional trains, however, large dogs – excluding assistance dogs – require a ticket. This costs half the price of a standard second-class ticket.
Passengers must carry their dog’s canine registry certificate and health booklet, or for foreign residents, the dog’s passport. This requirement does not apply to assistance dogs, for whom a training certificate from an accredited canine centre or institute is mandatory. Staff may request to see this documentation, except for guide dogs accompanying passengers with visual impairments.
Assistance dogs travel free on all train categories, service levels, and classes, including restaurant/bar cars, FrecciaLink services, and replacement buses.
