India’s aviation regulator has mandated that airlines inspect engine power control switches on Boeing 787 and 737 aircraft by July 21st. The directive, issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), follows the preliminary crash report for flight AI171. That Ahmedabad-to-London flight crashed on June 12th, killing all 260 people aboard.
Preliminary findings identified the fuel control switch operation as critical after revealing fuel flow was cut off seconds after takeoff. Indian carriers Air India, Air India Express, Akasa Air, SpiceJet, and IndiGo operate a combined fleet of 150 affected Boeing models. All these aircraft are leased and therefore not registered in India. Several airlines stated they had already initiated precautionary checks independently.
