Mother Demands Government Action as Son Marks Eight Months in Venezuelan Prison

Armanda Trentini, mother of Italian detainee Alberto Trentini, decried the “unbearable silence” from Italy’s Prime Minister during a protest outside Rome’s courthouse today. Her son has been imprisoned in Venezuela since November.

“Eight months have passed without action from our government, while Switzerland secured the release of Alberto’s fellow detainee who confirmed his terrible conditions,” stated Trentini. “Our institutions must urgently deploy every diplomatic tool to bring him home. Each day of inaction means unspeakable suffering.”

She spoke ahead of a hearing in the Giulio Regeni murder trial, where her son had participated before his detention. Trentini emphasized: “We cannot wait any longer. No contacts exist – we trust someone will do what’s necessary.”

Democratic Party Secretary Elly Schlein, joining the sit-in, declared: “We demand concrete government commitment to free Alberto Trentini – guilty only of helping the vulnerable abroad. Switzerland’s success proves action is possible.” Schlein stressed the released prisoner’s account of “unbearable prison conditions,” adding: “This situation is intolerable. We reiterate our call for immediate intervention.”
