Police in Rieti have identified and will charge a local couple for the theft and destruction of an electric mobility scooter belonging to a disabled resident. Officers from the Flying Squad recovered the completely dismantled vehicle today after a three-day search.
The couple, reportedly already known to police, is also suspected of committing other recent thefts in the city. The initial crime sparked widespread outrage in Rieti after the victim’s family issued a social media appeal. The stolen scooter was the only means for Eros, who has spastic tetraparesis, to travel independently within the city and reach his workplace at the Rieti Provincial Administration.
Community mobilization to support Eros is underway. Adding to his hardship, Eros also lost his mother in the 2016 Amatrice earthquake when her home collapsed.
“The scooter was found,” wrote Eros’s brother Roberto on Facebook, “but reduced to pieces by those who chose theft over work. It’s a cowardly act. People with disabilities need support, and a vehicle like Eros’s is vital for his autonomy.” Non-profit organization LocoMotiva, which supports adults with autism, has provided a temporary replacement electric scooter, allowing Eros mobility while a permanent solution is sought. Offers to fund a new vehicle have already emerged.
Rieti Mayor Daniele Sinibaldi expressed condemnation to ANSA: “I express outrage and condemnation for this vile act which has shocked the whole City of Rieti. I hope justice takes its course. While extending my full solidarity to Eros, I must highlight the unanimous reaction of the Rieti community, which immediately mobilized. The best and strongest response to a shameful act. Obviously, the Municipality will also play its part.”
