Two forty-year-old men from Marano, Naples, Dario Liccardo and Maurizio Corrado, died yesterday in a collision between their Fiat Panda and a bus carrying 35 passengers on the SS17 state highway near Rivisondoli (L’Aquila). Identification was completed overnight as one victim lacked identification documents.
Carabinieri from Castel di Sangro, investigating the crash, are exploring potential links to summer thefts or scams targeting the elderly. One victim had relevant prior convictions, and jewelry along with €1,500 in cash were found inside the Panda. Preliminary reconstruction suggests the Panda, likely traveling at high speed, crossed into the oncoming lane and struck the private bus.
The two men died instantly. Five bus passengers sustained minor injuries and received on-site medical treatment.
The Sulmona Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened a road homicide investigation file against the bus driver as a procedural requirement. An autopsy has been ordered.
