Wildfire Reaches Patras Suburbs, Hundreds of Vehicles Destroyed

The wildfire raging since yesterday in northern Peloponnese’s Achaia regional unit has reached houses and streets in several Patras suburbs, including Bozaitika, Profitis Ilias, and Ano Sychaina, according to Mayor Kostas Peletidis speaking to Kathimerini.

Patras’ mayor, governing Greece’s third-largest city, stated the situation was “until recently critical” but is now improving following firefighting helicopter interventions. Dense smoke from the blaze has enveloped Patras city center, prompting municipal authorities to open air-conditioned facilities for vulnerable residents and those with respiratory conditions. The city has also established collection points for water and food supplies supporting evacuees from fire-threatened settlements.

Kathimerini further reports the flames engulfed a vehicle storage depot, destroying 550 cars, many of which were designated for scrapping.

Greek firefighters continue battling major wildfires across multiple regions for a second consecutive day. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis chaired an emergency meeting this morning at the National Crisis Coordination Center within the Civil Protection Ministry in Athens to manage the ongoing blazes.
