An 83-year-old pensioner from Capua (Caserta) has died at Sant’Anna e San Sebastiano Hospital in Caserta after contracting West Nile virus, marking the eighth fatality from the virus in the Caserta province. Separately, an 85-year-old man from Cori in Latina province died this morning at Santa Maria Goretti Hospital in Latina, becoming the ninth West Nile victim in the Lazio region.
The Caserta victim had been hospitalized in recent days, with his condition deteriorating rapidly. In response, Capua Mayor Adolfo Villani activated area monitoring protocols near the man’s residence and issued a precautionary ordinance mandating the cleanup of abandoned land, disused swimming pools, and any structures capable of holding stagnant water to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
The Lazio victim, who had pre-existing medical conditions, was admitted on August 2 in critical condition prior to his death.
