A tribute to Alberto Trentini, a Venetian aid worker detained in Venezuela, and to the war in Ukraine were central themes of a boat procession this afternoon that preceded Venice’s Historic Regatta. A lifeboat led by Ukrainian veterans from Odesa paraded along the Grand Canal, receiving applause from the public crowding the waterways’ edges. Present on the “Machina,” the floating stage for authorities, was Gennadiy Trukhanov, the Mayor of Odesa—Venice’s twin city. Among the boats moored along the canal, a number of Palestinian flags were also visible.
