The world is watching in horror as the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories continues to deteriorate to levels unseen in recent history, a senior UN official stated. Addressing the UN Security Council, Ramiz Alakbarov, the Deputy UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, reported that more than twenty-two months into the hostilities, “Gaza is sinking deeper into disaster,” characterized by a rapid rise in civilian casualties, mass displacement, and now, famine. He added that hostages held by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups “continue to languish in appalling conditions.” Alakbarov further warned that the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is simultaneously facing an unprecedented crisis, where the relentless expansion of settlements, demolitions, and escalating violence continue to undermine any prospect for peace.
