The U.S. National Park Service (NPS) has announced plans to reinstall a statue of Confederate General Albert Pike that was toppled in Washington D.C. during the 2020 racial justice protests. The decision follows two executive orders signed by then-President Donald Trump aimed at “making the District of Columbia safe and beautiful” and “restoring truth and sanity to American history,” the NPS stated.
The Pike statue was the sole monument to a Confederate general in the U.S. capital prior to its destruction amidst nationwide protests sparked by the killing of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American man, by a white police officer in Minneapolis. Trump denounced the statue’s destruction at the time as a “disgrace.” The NPS confirmed the statue is currently undergoing restoration, with the goal of reinstalling it by October 2025.
