Two-Wheeler Market Slows in August After Summer Gains

After showing progress in June and July, the Italian two-wheeler market hit the brakes in August, registering 16,202 new units—a decline of 9.27%. The data was released by Confindustria Ancma, the National Association for Bicycles, Motorcycles, and Accessories.

The association reported that registrations for the first eight months of the year now total 262,475 units, reflecting an overall contraction of 3.79%, which worsened from the 3.40% decline recorded in July.

The motorcycle segment saw a return to double-digit decline, falling by 18.94% with 6,070 new vehicles registered. In contrast, the scooter segment remained nearly stable compared to August 2024, with a slight dip of just 0.21%, tallying 9,346 new units.

Mopeds continue to face a difficult period, having never posted positive growth in 2025. Registrations for these “fiftycc” vehicles fell by 21.64%, with only 786 units sold.

“A more detailed analysis of the summer data confirms that the transition to the EURO 5+ classification, and the consequent surge in registrations at the end of 2024, has influenced the entire market this year, particularly impacting motorcycle sales,” commented Mariano Roman, President of Confindustria Ancma. “In light of this, the overall trend remains satisfactory, and the numbers suggest market dynamics are returning to patterns more similar to the pre-Covid period.”

The electric market declined for the third consecutive month, attributed to the rapid exhaustion of Ecobonus incentives during the spring. Year-to-date, the segment is down 16.72%, with 6,088 new electric vehicles hitting the road. The situation is particularly challenging for electric mopeds, which represent over a third of the zero-emission market; they fell 27.73% compared to 2024, with a total of 2,134 units registered.

The market for quadricycles was halved in August, plummeting 46.65% with 613 new units. The decline was similar for both electric and thermal engine quadricycles. However, in the cumulative annual figures, electric minicars are still in positive territory, up 18.58%. The annual loss for all quadricycles is more contained at -4.95%, with 11,887 total vehicles registered.
